How We Grow

Why Seed Garlic From Basaltic Farms

Triple Certified Organic

Every bulb we sell is certified three ways: CCOF, USDA Organic, and the Real Organic Project. The paperwork is real and so is the practice behind it.

High Elevation, Volcanic Ground

Our fields sit at 3,300 feet in the Fall River Valley, on soil laid down by ancient basalt flows. Cold winters and mineral-rich ground suit garlic well.

Sorted by Bulb Size

We grade by bulb size, not clove count. The largest bulbs ship first, first come, first served, so early orders get the best seed.

Shipped for Fall Planting

Orders ship starting in September so your seed arrives cured, intact, and ready to go in the ground in October and November.

Before You Order

Plan Your Planting

Match varieties to your growing zone, figure out how many pounds your beds actually need, and check bulk pricing before you commit. A few minutes of planning saves a lot of guessing in October.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

When will my order ship?

Preorders open March 1 and shipping begins in September, once the garlic is harvested and cured. Orders go out in time for fall planting, and you receive tracking the day your order leaves the farm.

How does sizing and pricing work?

We grade by bulb size, not clove count, and charge one price across sizes. The largest bulbs ship first, first come, first served, so ordering early gets you the best seed. Bulk discounts start at 5 pounds and apply per variety.

How should I store my seed garlic before planting?

Keep it somewhere cool and dry with good airflow, ideally 55 to 65 degrees, in mesh or paper rather than plastic. Never refrigerate seed garlic, since the cold-then-warm swing when you take it back out is what triggers early sprouting. Stored this way, your bulbs hold well until planting.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, with conditions. International orders have a 25 pound minimum, require phytosanitary certificates at the buyer's expense for most countries, and cost substantially more to ship. Contact us directly rather than ordering through standard checkout.

Does growing garlic in volcanic soil actually matter?

There is no scientific consensus that volcanic soil makes garlic better. But there is substantial research on other crops, and we can infer from it that the minerals in volcanic soil benefit any crop that uses them. Flavor and clove count may be affected too, but we won't make that claim, because we don't have a control to test it against.
