We started Basaltic Farms back in 2018 after losing everything in the Tubbs Wildfire, and honestly it’s turned into something we never expected. Our certified organic garlic farm sits at 3,100 feet elevation in McArthur, California, where the volcanic soil is loaded with 67 trace minerals that make our garlic taste like nothing you’ve found in a supermarket. We’ve learned that if you take care of the soil, the soil takes care of you — and so far that’s proven true.

We hold triple certifications from CCOF, USDA Organic, and Real Organic Project, which means three inspections every year and zero chemicals. Our organic garlic varieties store for 8 to 10 months when done right, and every bulb gets inspected by our family before it ships. We’re a small family organic garlic farm and our goal is 100% customer satisfaction — each bulb travels from our hands straight into kitchens and gardens across America. What Is Organic Farming

It really comes down to one thing — healthy soil grows healthy plants. Our volcanic soil here in McArthur is naturally loaded with up to 67 trace minerals, but having minerals in the ground and getting plants to actually use them are two different things. Balancing soil takes years of work, and we’ve relied on cover crop rotations and regular lab reports from Ward Laboratories to dial it in season after season.

We work with nature, not against it. No chemicals. No shortcuts. Just good old-fashioned farming done right.   • Naturally Grown Products – We go beyond basic organic standards. Our farm uses cover crops, composting, and beneficial insects to create nutrient-rich garlic. Discover their regenerative, naturally grown products, which utilize zero synthetic inputs.
  • Fall Planting – Pre-orders open March 1 each year for fall planting varieties. These are planted October-December. Each order comes with zone-specific growing guides upon request.
  • California Grown Produce – All California-grown produce ships directly from our farm. We handle every step, from harvesting to curing, cleaning, and packing. We are not Amazon, but we sure try with our four full-time owners and seasonal help.

  • Certified Organic Garlic – Our signature certified organic garlic includes triple-certified varieties that thrived in volcanic soil. So when you plant our seeds they are super healthy and will provide you with an outstanding crop.
  • Softneck Garlic – These milder softneck garlic varieties work well for braiding. They keep for 8-12 months when stored properly.
  • Hardneck Garlic – Our hardneck garlic offers bolder flavors plus spring scapes as a bonus. They store for 6-9 months. The complex flavor makes up for shorter storage. Hard to braid
  • Heirloom Eating Garlic – All our garlic varieties come from certified heirloom seeds. Our garlic varieties are not found in large retail stores.   • Heat Tolerant Garlic – We sell special heat tolerant garlic varieties that work well in warm climates. Our mediterranean microclimate reaches temps above 100 degrees for a few summer months and also receives minus 19 degrees in winter. Our farm has the perfect environment for complete vernalization of both hard and softneck garlics. So when you receive our garlic it is ready to plant or eat immediately.

Why does Basaltic Farms have three certifications?

The farm holds CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), USDA Organic, and Real Organic Project certification to enlist customer trust and support. If you follow the rules and regulations everyone wins.

Can I visit the farm?

We welcome visitors by appointment. From March to Early December or sold out. July-August is harvest time—busy but exciting. We can provide personal tours and we love teaching visitors about farming. If we are harvesting we may ask you to help out. We also have a small food forest that is producing limited amounts of produce, berries and nuts and if available they would be displayed in our site store. These items are not available online.

What makes your farming location special?

Our farm sits at 3,100 feet elevation in McArthur, California, which provides four true seasons. This elevation is important for garlic vernalization – when garlic receives at least 40 days of cold/freezing weather, it significantly enhances flavor development, which is a key factor in our exceptionally flavorful garlic.

How does volcanic soil affect garlic quality?

We found after consulting with soil scientists that we have a unique soil composition perfect for growing many types of crops but garlic shines due to the amount of minerals our plants can uptake and pass on to you naturally. Certain cover crops like mustards and buckwheat unlock sulfur compounds which sharpens and define our garlic flavors.

How is your garlic different from store-bought?

Basaltic grown garlic is 100% better than imported garlic found in most big box stores. Unfortunately the USA has imported cheap garlic from China for years. It’s grown with toxic chemicals, sewer sludge, it’s bleached to hide defects and finally irradiated before it can be sold in the USA. This needs to change and Basaltic Farms is doing our part. We sell only healthy organic food, not garbage.

Which garlic variety should I choose?

Hardnecks like Music or Chesnok Red offer complex flavors and can be stored for up to 4-7 months. Softnecks provide milder flavors but store for 8-10 months. For warm climates, try our heat-tolerant varieties for best results.

When should I order from the farm?

Pre-orders open on March 1st of each year. Popular varieties like Music and Chesnok Red often sell out by July. Fresh garlic ships from August through January or until sold out.

Farming Practices & Storage FAQ

How does the farm practice regenerative farming?

We focus on improving our soil, not just maintaining it. Each year, we add as much farm made compost as possible. Our goal is 4,000 yards of compost per year, we also plant diverse cover crops, minimize tilling, and track soil organic matter for certification. Our soil has improved from 1% to 5.5% organic matter in six years. Which is remarkable our goal is 13%.

How should I store garlic for maximum shelf life?

Keep it cool (55-65°F), moderately humid (60-70%), with good airflow. Avoid plastic bags and refrigeration. Use clay keepers, paper bags, or mesh containers. Properly stored, softnecks last 8-10 months and hardnecks 4-7 months.
