Our basaltic soil contains 67 trace minerals from ancient lava flows – with three times more sulfur than regular farmland. It’s like God gave us the perfect recipe for growing garlic! When we tested our soil after buying the farm in 2018, we were amazed by the mineral content. This creates garlic with deeper flavors, better storage life, and stronger growth.

When should I order from Basaltic Farms?

Mark March 1st on your calendar! That’s when our pre-orders open each year. Our most popular varieties, like Music and Chesnok Red, typically sell out by June. Our fresh garlic ships from August through early February after proper curing in our temperature contro;led curing barns.

This varies by variety. Our Susanville gives you 10-16 seeds per bulb (6-8 bulbs per pound).Sicilian, Inchelium Red, and Red Toch offer 12-18 seeds per bulb (7-11 bulbs per pound). Currently we are using a very cool machine that allows us crack tons of garlic bulbs in a few hours. We remove the outer skins of the main garlic bulb (Garlic Farmers call this “cracking garlic”). This process separates bulbs into individual seeds/cloves and are now ready for plantingor other processing. Each seed has a natural protective paper that we never remove. We select the largest cloves for planting and use the smaller ones for freeze dried garlic or in our kitchen.

What makes your seed garlic different from regular eating garlic?

All garlic is edible! Seeds and cloves are the same thing. Our certified organic seed garlic from our volcanic soil is of higher quality and perfect for both planting and eating. Store-bought garlic may contain chemicals to prevent sprouting.

After years of experience, we’ve learned that timing is everything! You can plant after a freeze, but it’s more work.Fall planting gives roots time to develop before the ground freezes solid.
